I was wondering about the show, "Medium." I know it is based on a real medium but are the stories based on fact? Does the real medium work with the police? Just curious. It is a very good show and I like how they portray her as such a "regular" person!
Hi Nancy, and welcome!
You know, it's funny...I had just ASSumed that the show was based on a true story, I guess I never really read it anywhere. So I googled it, and the only thing I could come up with the definitively stated it was based on Ms. Dubois' life was from scifi.com...

Arquette Talks Medium Well
Patricia Arquette, star of NBC's upcoming supernatural series Medium, told SCI FI Wire she was a little worried about taking on the job of portraying a real person, Allison Dubois, who says she has psychic abilities. The series, based on Dubois' life, explores what happens when an average wife and mother begins to work with the police to help solve missing-persons and murder cases.
"Before we even shot the pilot," Arquette said in an interview, "I went out to meet her and said, 'Are you really ready for this? This is going to be very weird. Pretty quickly things are going to have to separate off from you. And I don't want you to have your feelings be hurt or have you upset if you call and say, "Me and [my husband] Joe didn't have that fight."' I'm not having that problem, because at a certain point they're going to have to go with dramatic license."
Arquette added, "Right away I said, 'Here's some aspects of your personality that I know right off the bat I'm going to change, just because for TV it will be clearer in some kind of way' or 'These are things that I want to experiment with.' Yeah, there's a fierce responsibility, but we had that conversation early on, and we knew what we were getting into here, I hope."
For Dubois, who says she has seen ghosts and asserts that she has been able to tap into the thoughts of the living since she was a child, talking to the dead isn't nearly as strange as watching her life being played out on television. "Seeing my life on TV," Dubois said in a separate interview, "it was very profound for me when I watched the pilot for the first time, because I felt that I had this whole world inside of me that other people didn't understand, and to see it laid out in front of my eyes, I've never had to look at who I am before. In that respect, it was very moving to finally ... feel understood on many levels." Medium premieres Jan. 3 at 10 p.m. ET/PT and will air Mondays in that timeslot. NBC is owned by NBC Universal, which also owns SCIFI.COM."
Whether its' 100% based on Ms. Dubois' life or not, I love the show and think it has some really great potential to help break the stereotypes about mediumship.
The show is based on the book that Ms. Dubois wrote, called "Don't Kiss Them Goodbye" which is her own true account of her work, available at Amazon:
About the Author
Allison is a 32-year-old psychic research medium and law enforcement profiler. She has had her gift validated through scientific research at the University of Arizona as being highly consistent and accurate. She is considered a "Michael Jordan" of mediumship and ranks in Dr. Gary Schwartz' "Dream Team" as being one of the top in her field. She has worked personally with law enforcement agencies such as the Texas Rangers on missing persons' cases. She has proven accurate at profiling murderers as well as helping to find the whereabouts of missing persons'. She is the topic of the NBC prime time drama "MEDIUM". She has also been featured on the national radio show "Edge of Reality" on the Talk of America Network for call in readings. She also does personal readings and public tours. Her direct style of "don't make the information fit" and her fresh, straight forward outlook allow her to connect with a broad spectrum of the public. She does not have the stereotypical, niche, "new-age" psychic image. She has an every-woman appeal which combined with her age allows her to reach younger markets than are typical to this genre. In addition to her unique abilities she is also the mother of three little girls. They carry her unusual abilities as well as her straight forward personality and vibrant sarcasm.
The TRUE STORY of the woman who inspired the NBC television show "MEDIUM". While interning in Homicide with the county attorney's office, Allison DuBois found she could do something remarkable. As she laid out crime scene photo's & gathered information for trial, she realized that she could see the crime through the eyes of the perpetrator. This experience prompted Allison to examine the full extent of her abilities. She reached a juncture. Instead of running from her uniqueness, she decided to fully own it. Allison connects with her readers on a very personal level as she chronicles her walk through her personal wonderland.

Thanks for the info on the show (Medium). That makes it even more interesting to watch knowing that it is based on her true experiences. I plan to get the book, too. It seems to me that even though the show hasn't been on very long it gets better each time. I hope it does well in the ratings!
I just finished it and did it in one day. It's that good. I would rate it right up there with John's "One Last Time".
The book is very well written and easy to read. Allison comes through as an intelligent, honest, compassionate, and VERY gifted person. I don't think anyone on here will be disappointed with it.
