Did any one of you see People Magazine's program on the 25 most intriguing people of 2001 that aired tonight at 9 CST?
Seems as though our John Edward has made the list!!!
Just a brief bit on him, but I know I'll be watching the news stands for the next issue ...

John's work is much more than captivating. Had he NOT made the list, People Magazine would be hearing from US.

People.com (the online version) doesn't go into real depth about JE being named one of the 25. I guess the magazine has more details. Here is the blurb about his being named one of "The 25 Most Intriguing People of 2001":
JOHN EDWARD helped believers contact departed loved ones, while skeptics questioned his psychic gifts.

I just read my People magazine and I am torn between being mad... and yet excited that he is getting such attention lately. The "mad" part is because "Crossing Over" the book, was listed on the "Worst of Pages" section, stating "Edward has a gift, all right---for making money. This collection of tall tales about how the self-described "psychic" author and Sci-Fi Channel star reaches out to the other side is about as illuminating as a Ouija board."
Then on page 79 is the article, which doesn't come off so negatively but says that the Scientific Investigation of Claims of the Paranormal calls his technique "an artful method of fishing for information." "Others say he trades on the vulnerability of the bereaved." They also touched on the reading of the families of the WTC as far as the questionable taste of his producers for taping them. It closes with Johns remark about a firefighters widow's thanks for giving her closure, "That's all I need to hear, EVERYONE ELSE CAN BITE ME!"
I think some letters to the editor would be a good idea! They obviously have never watched CO or they would see for themselves that he isn't "fishing for information" he is giving it! It would also be so cool if some of the prominent people he has read would speak out for what good he does.
Maybe I am just too thin skinned when it comes to people I believe are good and real being critisized by those who haven't experienced John and what he does.

Nana, I think writing letters to the editor is a good idea. I read People magazine all the time, and I always read the letters. I'm sure that there will be people writing from the sceptics point of view. Let's help to bring a balance to that section.
I can't believe that review of the book! I thought it was awesome. Of course you have to be familar with the show for any of it to make sense. I'm guessing the reviewer never has.
Thanks Nana :D

I have been checking the stores everyday to see if the new People magazine is out yet. Thank you for letting me know I don't have to bother looking anymore. I now have NO interest in buying it.

Hi,
I'm sure I'll be ducking soda cans for this, but here goes.
I saw the T.V. special. I saw the magazine.
My feelings were bittersweet and complex. Proud? Oh yes.
Happy for the sign that his message spreads wider, more main-
stream, offering comfort now that the world needs it more than
ever? Oh, you bet!
But I found myself fighting back a feeling I used to get when
I was watching my children grow up. Pride for their accomplishments, awe as I recognized the fine young men they
were emerging into, joy when others recognized it too. But a
little sense of saddness as well.
Maybe it's just a selfish thing. I knew I would always have a
special place with them, but I knew I was destined to share them
with the world.
It suprised me when this emotion clicked for a moment with Johns new recognition. I started remembering him a few years ago on the Maury show. Younger, still trying to prove himself. I
remember going to Pam's board on Delphi, when we had some-
times 10 posts a day. And the first C.O. Smaller gallery, younger,
different, John really.
It's like he is all grown up now. Confident, recognized, and
inspiring pride in me. And I KNOW the more who receive comfort
from his message, the better. But what you feel logically is not
always the same as what you feel in your heart. And sometimes
when I see this type of acknowlegement, I get a type of flash-
back to waving goodbye to my son as he flew off to a third world
country to change some lives. Full of pride, but unable to deny a
touch of saddness.

I saw a brief view of the magazine in the doctor's office last week. Although I rarely pick up magazines, I had to check this one out. I think JE is in the top 100. Somewhere around 71.
Next year he will be in the top 10. :D
That was beautifully written Julie. TY
You can e-mail your letters to editor@people.com.:cuser:
We need to overwhelm them with the truth about JE and CO and MAYBE they will do an actual story on John which would include interviews with people he has read. Of course, they will also probably have to include skeptical points of view also but I would really like to see a good article in that magazine about John.:teacher:

But don't forget that the reason JE is in that issue is that the People editors find him one of the most intriguing people of the year! That, to me, is a very positive thing.
Well, I was in a grocery store and there was the magazine at the checkout. I did buy it and it's not as bad as I thought. There's a nice large picture of John with the title, "Psychic Phenomenon" over the top of the page. As it has already been posted, it's great that he is one of the Most Intriguing People of 2001. The article was obviously written by someone who would never believe John is real, no matter what, and I don't think that so-called Scientific Investication Committee has ever admitted anything paranormal is real. The article didn't mention the opinions of any people he has read..... I'm just waiting for those letters to pour into the magazine.:)

Just sent an e-mail to People Magazine. I just told them that before passing judgement, they should try to set up an interview. Sheila
Probably without meaning to, the title People put over John is a compliment. I looked in my old paperback Webster's Dictionary and the meaning for Psychic is: 1. Of the Psyche, or mind. 2. Beyond known physical processes. 3. Apparently sensitive to forces beyond the physical world....Phenomenon:
1. Any observable fact or event that can be scientifically described. 2.Anything very unusual.
3. An extraordinary person; prodigy.
:D Sound like someone we know and love?
Gail:)
When I sent my e-mail to them, I did mention the fact the he was one of the 25 most intriguing people. I was mainly upset that they put his book on the Worst Pages section. I also mentioned that they should do a "real" story on him. It just doesn't make sense that a book that was #1 on the best seller list would even be considered in the "worst pages" category!

It just doesn't make sense that a book that was #1 on the best seller list would even be considered in the "worst pages" category!Well, popular does not alway equal good. I think we could all name best-selling books, popular TV shows and movies which we think are pretty bad.
But aside from that, I'm sure there were lots of obscure books, movies, etc., which were worse than those which made People's list. But they (People) seem to only consider things which the general public might have heard about, which usually means things which acheived at least some degree of success.
So the lists are always likely to contain some #1 best sellers and #1 box office hits (such as Pearl Harbor, a movie which tons of people saw, yet which was pretty lame, special effects aside).
Although I'm sure he would have preferred to be on the "best" list, my guess is that JE, like most people in the public eye, puts it in the "as long as they spell my name right, there ain't no such thing as bad publicity" category.

I understand what you are saying Bob, and I must agree. I guess it goes back to the old "I can critisize my brother, but no one else had better say anything about him" kind of feeling. It was just so aggravating to read when I truly believe in what John does and so loved the book.

I can assure you, having had conversations with John, that your assumption is incorrect.

I think what she's trying to say is that it's about the MESSAGE and NOT the MAN. John would rather not have his name mentioned at all. He shuns the limelight when he can, but part of his business is promotions, so it's necessary for him to do a fair amount of PR and nobody can do that for him.
Pam has it exactly right I think, and of everyone here I would say she would know. He DOES NOT fall into the category of those celebrities who just long for recognition of any sort, good or bad.

(Ahem) Having known people in the the public eye in the past, I have to say that NO ONE likes to have their life's work maligned, or have hurtful things said about them in the press. At best, they have to accept that it is part of the territory of being "known", and deal with it as gracefully as they can; something that most of us, thankfully, don't have to experience.
"Publicity, good or bad"? If anyone said that, it was a P.R. Man. ;)

Well said! I think that in situations like this, it's good to consider the source of the criticism. People Magazine is hardly a bastion of good taste in literature, or anything else for that matter. Not that I'm above reading it, mind you. I like frivolous magazines as much as the next person. I don't actually buy it, but I'll shamelessly peruse it in the doctor's office.
As for being in "worst pages", JE is in good company - I notice John Irving's latest was in there too. I bought that book for my brother on his birthday. He's a pretty discriminating reader, and though he wasn't lavishly praising it as the great American novel, he certainly didn't describe it the way People Magazine did.
The People people are entitled to their opinions, but what they see as being good or bad is subject to their personal bias. I haven't read JE's books, but I did read some sample pages on Amazon, and I thought he had an engaging, conversational voice.
I also think it's important to point out that publishing, like any other business, has its lobbyists, whose function is to get their products placed on "best" lists and named as award winners. If your publisher or literary agent isn't engaging in these sorts of maneuvers, it can be a tough to get any sort of positive recognition, unless your work is so undeniably brilliant that it's practically a criminal offense to ignore it.

I don't know if this was posted anywhere else, but did anyone see that John was picked as one of People Magazine's Most Intriguing People of 2001? The article didn't seem very positive to me though--but I loved the end where John used his famous words-- "Bite Me!"
