BEREAVEMENT SERVICES:

· General tips about how to locate services in the area:

· Call local hospital and ask to speak to the hospital social worker. These individuals are usually knowledgeable about all support groups in the area.
· Check the Yellow page listings under “Mental Health Associations.”
· Contact the local mental health hotline. Volunteers who man the hotlines usually have extensive knowledge of local support groups.
· Contact the local hospice organization. Even if the patient was not a resident of that hospice, they have listings of all bereavement support groups.
· Contact local churches about support groups. Most church support groups do not require that the person be of that faith to attend. They may also have listings of secular groups.
· Contact the local funeral home. Many local funeral homes sponsor bereavement support groups.

· NOTE:

· After locating a support group, make a commitment to go several times before deciding to stay in the group or not.
· If the spouse refuses to attend a support group, go anyway. Only the person looking for services can define what type of support they need.
· If the person feels the group is not right (after attending several times), encourage them not to give up on support groups all together. Another support group might be a better fit.
