Forgive me if this has already been posted here at some time, but I don't remember seeing it. I purchased a sympathy card several years ago with this poem in it. I always meant to try and find it again, but never did. I looked it up on the Internet yesterday and thought I'd share it.

The Rose Beyond The Wall

Near a shady wall a rose once grew,
Budded and blossomed in God's free light:
Watered and fed by morning dew,
Shedding its sweetness day and night.

As it grew and blossomed fair and tall,
Slowly rising to loftier height,
It came to a crevice in the wall,
Through which there shone a beam of light.

Onward it crept with added strength
With never a thought of fear or pride,
It followed the light through the crevice length,
And unfolded itself on the other side.

The light, the dew, the broadening view
Were found the same as they were before.
And it lost itself in beauties new.
Breathing its fragrance more and more.

Shall claim of death cause us to grieve,
And make our courage faint or fall?
Nay, let us faith and hope receive,
The rose still grows beyond the wall.

Scattering fragrance far and wide,
Just as it did in days of yore.
Just as it did on the other side,
Just as it will forevermore.

I posted that same poem on Judy Guggenheim's ADC board about a month ago. The poem and the timing of it's posting became an ADC for two other people there when they read it. That made me feel so good about having posted it. :)

that is a beautiful poem, thanks for posting, this is the same poem but changed slightly I recieved sympathy cards with this lovely poem on when my mum passed, and I liked it so much I framed one,

The rose beyond the wall

A rose once grew where all could see,
sheltered beside a garden wall,
And as the days passed swiftly by,
it spread it's branches straight and tall...

Oneday, a beam of light shone through
a crevice that had opened wide-
The rose bent gently towards its warmth
then passed beyond to the other side...

Now you who deeply feel it's loss,
be comforted - the rose blooms there-
it's beauty even greater now
nurtured by god's own loving care.

What synchronisity! I just returned from vacaton and at a little antique shop I saw a framed picture w/ this poem. I was so meaningful that I was teary eyed - but it was way too expensive to buy. I tried to memorize the author, but forgot by the time I got home - and today here it is! Thank you so much!!

You're welcome, Jessie. I don't know what made me think of it after all these years. If you type in "Rose Beyond the Wall" in any search engine, I'm sure you could find a frame-able version.

Clareb, do I detect a British accent when you mention your "mum"? It's kind of ironic, the person for whom I bought the sympathy card containing this poem, so many years ago, was my aunt who lives in the London area, when her son died. I also saw the version you mentioned when I was looking for it online. Each version is beautiful, I think.

I bet you didn't know we could hear your accent online. :D

My family who lives in the London area are named O'Shea. Know any O'Sheas? :)
