In the Skeptical Discussion folder, JEFriends are asking the skeptics who quote Randi as a valid resource:

Why isn’t Randi going after the Ms. Cleo company? If his complaint is that John Edward is separating people from their money, surely that company rakes in more cash than John Edward will ever see in a life time. Surely that would be a “bigger bang” for his skeptical buck.

What do you think? Would you ask Randi to debunk Ms. Cleo?

The “Ms. Cleo” you see on commercials hawking 1-900 psychic phone calls is a paid actress and dancer. There is no real “Ms Cleo” and this question refers to the company that runs those commercials and the phone lines.

    Pam,
Having paid little attention to Randi until recently, I admit my
opinion on this comes more from a gut level than information.
The way I see it, Randi seems to derive some sick satisfaction
from going after a real challenge, like a big game hunter after a
real source to be reckoned with, as opposed to an elderly, over
    sedated easy target.
In John he has a real challenge, and a self-delusional ego that
leds him to believe he can change the minds of the masses from
whom John has so rightfully earned respect. The volume and
passion of those people continue to grow. So does Randi’s almost evil competitive spirit.
Ms. Cleo is too easy of a target. She has become synonomous
with a joke. Anyone sending her their money is viewed as path-
etic, and foder for late night comics and SNL skits. Not someone
Randi could satisfy his hunger for impressing people by debunk-
    ing.
    Just my opinion.

Although I would love to see Ms. Cleo put out of business, I agree that most people think of her as a joke, and if Randi debunked her, there would be a large, collective “well, duh!!” from the country.

She is an actress, with a phony accent, and probably does few (if any) of the actual readings. In my mind, debunking her would be like debunking a fictional character.

Anyone sending her their money is viewed as pathetic, and fodder for late night comics and SNL skits.

Be careful what you say! As popular as he is getting, I would be very surprised if JE isn’t the target of an SNL skit or two this season! :)

I had never heard of thie Randi guy so I hopped over to his web site just to take a look-see.

Did you know that you coluld “Help support the JREF (James Randi Educational Foundation) through, grants, gifts donations and memberships” ?

Heck the “Introductory Membership” is only $50.00, the “Individual Membership” is only $100.00 and a “Student Membership” is only $25.00 !!!

I don’t know …. I could call CLEO for less $ than that and have more fun … LOL

Trying to prevent people from wasting their money on frauds my butt … personally, I think he’s using this “Skeptic” thing to pull a “Reverse Cleo” and make his own millions !!!

Oh, this vote was too easy. In my mind supporting Randi debunking anyone just gives a semblance of credibility where none is deserved.

Years ago, I actually enjoyed Randi’s stuff. But because he and his followers see no perceptable difference between pseudo-science and a spiritual belief, he has me a bit worried.

I think if it were up to Randi, every house of worship would be closed down and all scriptural and religious writings be burned. He’d rid the world of every belief that didn’t match his own.

That worries me more, and seems way more dangerous than any fraudulaunt “snake oil selling faith healer” could ever be.
